Galo Roman Professor Messier English 102 October. 26,2017 What Makes a True Hero There are many people in The Essential Homer that are considered to be heroes for various reasons. Among them are Achilles, Odysseus, Agamemnon and the list goes on. However, the true hero is Hector. What makes Hector a hero, is that he is guided by his morals, he has a code of honor, and he fights for reasons outside of himself. On multiple occasions you can see that he is concerned about his people and his family. He inspires others to fight and had it not been for his death he probably would have succeeded in fighting off the Greeks. Hector is revered as a great fighter among the Trojans and the Greeks. (22.114-119) At first it may appear that he goes out to fight Achilles because he is honorable, which may be part of it, however, its mostly due to the fact that he would rather face Achilles and die then face hearing, I told you so. His pride is what got him killed and caused his city to fall, however his pride also allowed him to die with honor, But now my death is upon me. Let me at least not die without a struggle, inglorious, but do some big thing first, that men shall come to know of it. (22. 303-305) Hector has shown on many occasions that he has an immense love for his family, especially his wife and child. When he is going off to fight, he has a tender moment with his wife, and tries to make her feel better, saying, You worry too much about me, Andromache. No one is going to send me to hades before my time. (6.511-513) He takes his son from her and says to him, Zeus and all gods: grant that this my son, become as I am... may men say he is far better than his father. Separation of powers provides our government with a system of checks and balances, a way to prevent one branch from becoming too powerful. This concept was important in the creation of our government because it prevented one central government. Our Framers wanted to avoid a government that was run by one person, or one super powerful group. The Legislative and Judicial branches check over the Executive Branch in this manner because even though they are enforcing the laws, the Legislative Branch is the one with the ability to fund the laws and other executive actions, while the Judicial Branch interprets them. And, though the Legislative Branch has the power to impeach the president, a Chief Justice (a member of the Judicial Branch) sits as President of the Senate during this time. Each branch works together to ensure the other is doing what it’s supposed to be doing. I believe the Framers thought separation of powers was so important because their goal from the beginning was to establish a government that was unlike any other. Our Framers wanted to make sure that the government they were creating would be able to withstand itself over time. The Framers wanted to show they had faith (not much, but a little) in their fellow citizens by giving them the power to vote and make decisions. Giving the power to the people was the aim of our new government. By leaving behind countries where dictators ruled the people, and where Kings and Queens passed down authority from generation to generation, our Framers did everything they could to make sure our new government would not become what they disliked so much.
